The National Fruit Collection

Fruit for the Future is a brand committed to the conservation and utilization of genetic resources to support fruit production in the future. The National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, maintained by Defra, is one of the world's largest collections of fruit crops and is recognized internationally as a valuable genetic resource. Fruit for the Future, in collaboration with the University of Reading and Fruit Advisory Services Team, aims to enhance the utility and security of the collection for future research and breeding.

Conserving genetic diversity is a crucial aspect of managing the National Fruit Collection. This genetic diversity allows crops to adapt to the challenges posed by pests, diseases, changing market requirements, and climate change. However, promoting the utilization of the available genetic material is equally important.

Fruit for the Future actively encourages access to the collection for research and breeding purposes, offering around 3,500 accessions (samples) of different fruit varieties. To support ongoing breeding efforts and address food security challenges, the brand is developing the collection to represent the diversity within each crop species. This includes incorporating historic and current varieties significant to the UK, as well as accessions with important traits like disease resistance and fruit quality.
