About National Internet Observatory
The National Internet Observatory (NIO) is a research initiative housed at Northeastern University and supported by a $15. 7 million grant from the National Science Foundation. Its mission is to create a scientific record of how people experience the internet and how online platforms shape what they see.
The Observatory invites residents of the United States from all backgrounds to volunteer for a panel. Participants install software on their computers and contribute information about their online experiences and interactions as they use the internet and their phones. NIO then provides researchers with privacy-preserving access to collected data, enabling studies of the internet’s effects on individuals and society, including questions involving technology and artificial intelligence.
The initiative also supports approved research projects and offers resources for researchers and participants, including project information, guidance for installing its browser extension, and frequently asked questions. People who wish to support the work without joining the panel can donate
