The National Library of India is a government institution under the Ministry of Culture and one of the country’s foremost libraries. Originating in the Calcutta Public Library, established in the first half of the 19th century, it serves as a permanent repository for reading and printed materials produced in India, as well as works by foreign authors published anywhere and in any language. Under the Delivery of Books and Newspapers (Public Libraries) Act, 1954, it is one of four designated libraries entitled to receive a copy of every publication published in India.
The library offers books, magazines, journals and other resources to researchers, scholars and general readers. Its collections include rare materials, foreign and Indian publications, newspapers, journals, digital resources and digitized documents. Services include a library catalogue, online registration for citizens over 18, reader services, remote access, electronic resources and open educational resources. The institution also preserves and restores publications for current and future readers, and hosts exhibitions and cultural programs.
