National Midwifery Institute (NMI) is a MEAC-accredited educational institution focused on preserving community-based midwifery training and education. For more than 30 years, it has trained and supported midwives through a nonresidential distance-education model designed to help students learn while staying connected to their communities. Academic coursework is completed online at a flexible, self-paced schedule, and students arrange local, hands-on clinical training under the guidance of a qualified preceptor. NMI uses a monthly subscription model to help students manage education costs.
The institute offers two routes to a midwifery credential. Its Midwifery Certificate Program provides foundational academic and clinical education for aspiring midwives and fulfills educational requirements for pursuing state licensure and Certified Professional Midwife certification. The California Challenge Mechanism is intended for practicing midwives or CPMs seeking to meet California Medical Board requirements through an evaluation of their existing education and experience. NMI also provides prospective-student resources, transcript requests, faculty and clinical onboarding information, and a NARM practice exam.
