National Museum

The National Museum in New Delhi is a major cultural institution dedicated to preserving and sharing India’s heritage. Inaugurated in 1949 and based at Janpath since 1960, it presents collections spanning prehistoric archaeology, anthropology, arms and armour, decorative arts, jewellery, manuscripts, numismatics, painting, and Central Asian, Pre-Columbian and Western art. Exhibits include objects from the Indus Valley civilization, alongside works that illuminate the region’s artistic and historical traditions.

Visitors can explore permanent galleries, special and online exhibitions, a virtual tour, and features such as the Object of the Month. The museum also offers guided tours, film shows, auditorium bookings, photography requests and wheelchair access. Its learning and outreach activities include programmes for children and families, school visits, digital teaching resources, certificate courses, internships and research fellowships. The museum provides library and publication resources, as well as conservation and educational initiatives. Located in central New Delhi, it is open Tuesday to Sunday, with admission rates for adults, foreign nationals and students. Some galleries may close temporarily for renovation.
