NANPA, the North American Numbering Plan Administration, is responsible for the overall management and administration of numbering resources within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). While NANPA operates under the guidance of regulatory authorities in participating countries, it is not involved in policy-making. NANPA's key responsibilities include assigning NANP resources and coordinating area code relief planning in the United States and its territories.
They also collect utilization and forecast data to ensure efficient resource allocation. In addition to abiding by Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules, NANPA adheres to comprehensive technical requirements established by the telecommunications industry. NANPA serves as the national administrator for the United States and its territories, while COMsolve Inc.
Each participating country has its own regulatory authority overseeing numbering resources, either directly or through delegation to the dominant carrier. The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) itself is an integrated telephone numbering plan shared by 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, and various Caribbean nations. The plan was created by AT&T in 1947 to simplify long-distance dialing, and it follows the international standard for telephone numbering plans set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
NANP numbers consist of a three-digit area code followed by a seven-digit local number. For more information on NANP and its resources, visit their website under Numbering Resources
