About The Cultural Conservancy
The Cultural Conservancy is a Native-led nonprofit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our mission is to protect and restore Indigenous cultures, empowering them to apply traditional knowledge and practices on their ancestral lands. We work with Indigenous communities in Turtle Island, Abya Yala, and Moananuiākea.
At The Cultural Conservancy, we believe that Native Peoples have a sacred relationship with the land and a right to self-determination. We value Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing, recognizing their essential role in protecting the environment and biodiversity. Our organization is committed to intertribal and intergenerational transmission of knowledge, as well as intercultural alliance-building.
Our core values include respect for life, Indigenous rights and culture, and environmental health. We honor Indigenous peoples and communities through respectful collaborations and partnerships. We support initiatives that promote the well-being of native cultures, people, and land.
Through our work, we aim to revitalize tribally-specific traditional knowledge and practices, guided by the values and instructions of the Indigenous communities we partner with. Examples include Mino-bimadaziwin from the Anishinaabe of Turtle Island, emphasizing a good and healthy life committed to the rebirth of Creation's gifts, and Mālama ʻāina from Hawaiian culture, highlighting our responsibility to care for the land and elements that sustain us
