This groundbreaking study from Yale University has uncovered a special protein that helps ground squirrels resist the cold. The researchers found that ground squirrels, along with another hibernating animal, the Syrian hamster, have a unique tolerance to cold temperatures. This tolerance is linked to a specific cold-sensing protein called TRPM8, which is found in the sensory nerve cells of these animals.
To test this, the team conducted an experiment comparing the response of mice (which do not hibernate) to ground squirrels and Syrian hamsters when exposed to different plate temperatures. They discovered that while the mice strongly preferred the warmer plate, the squirrels and hamsters did not notice any difference in plate temperatures until it dipped below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This finding sheds new light on the remarkable adaptations of hibernators.
The ability to resist the cold is crucial for their survival during hibernation. While more research is needed to fully understand the connection between hibernation and this special protein, this study opens up exciting avenues for further exploration in the field of biology and animal physiology
