NATURVATION (Nature-Based Urban Innovation) is a European research project focused on the role of nature-based solutions in addressing urban sustainability challenges. Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, the four-year initiative brought together 14 institutions across Europe working in urban development, geography, innovation studies and economics. Led by Harriet Bulkeley of Durham University, the project aimed to deepen understanding of what nature-based solutions can achieve in cities, investigate how innovation in this field can be encouraged, and help realise the solutions’ potential through collaboration with communities and stakeholders.
The project’s website shares its findings and activities, and provides resources for people interested in urban nature and innovation. Its Urban Nature Atlas offers a database of 1,000 nature-based solutions, while the site also features information about collaborating cities, project outputs and ways to explore, assess, build capacity and take action. NATURVATION connects research with practical learning, supporting cities and stakeholders as they consider how nature can contribute to more sustainable urban environments.
