Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the Netherlands, dedicated to ensuring a safe, livable, and accessible country. One of its key initiatives is the research program "Natuurlijk Veilig," which collaborates with ten societal organizations to assess the ecological impact of sand replenishment along the Dutch coastline. Running from 2016 to 2021, this six-year program builds on the previous "Ecologically Oriented Supplementation" initiative. Since the 1990s, approximately 12,000 cubic meters of sand has been added annually to beaches and foreshore areas to maintain the coastline.
Natuurlijk Veilig studies the environmental effects of these interventions, emphasizing the importance of dunes, which not only protect against the North Sea but also support a rich biodiversity. With around 75% of the Netherlands’ plant species and a significant number of breeding birds inhabiting this 1% of the landscape, the program is vital for coastal conservation and management efforts.
