About NAWJ
NAWJ, or the National Association of Women Judges, has been a pioneer in the establishment and implementation of gender bias task forces in both federal and state courts. Since its formation in 1979, NAWJ has inspired and led the American judiciary in achieving fairness and equality for vulnerable populations. The organization's mission is to promote the judicial role of protecting the rights of individuals under the rule of law, ensuring equal access to justice, and fostering diverse judicial leadership.
Led by Justice Joan Dempsey Klein and Justice Vaino Spencer, NAWJ was founded with the ideals of providing equal justice and access to the courts for all, improving the administration of justice, and increasing the representation of women on the bench. NAWJ has played a significant role in advancing the administration of justice in various areas, including domestic violence, child support and custody, and the treatment of women in the courts of America. NAWJ is committed to diversity in its membership and welcomes both men and women.
Members include judges from federal, state, and tribal courts at every level, as well as attorneys, law clerks, law students, and law professors. As a member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), NAWJ also fosters international connections and collaboration. The organization is actively engaged in projects and judicial education that address important issues such as human trafficking, voter education in states with judicial elections, conditions for women in prison, and problems facing immigrants in the court system.
By participating in NAWJ's programs and events, members can stay at the forefront of legal and judicial issues. Whether you are a member of the judiciary or simply interested in supporting NAWJ's mission, there are various membership opportunities and ways to get involved. By joining NAWJ, you can contribute to the advancement of fairness, equality, and access to justice within the American judiciary
