The National Benchmark Test Project (NBTP), established in 2005 by the Higher Education South Africa (HESA), focuses on enhancing the quality of higher education by assessing student proficiency in key academic areas. As a self-funding initiative since 2018, the NBTP is committed to evaluating entry-level academic literacy and quantitative skills essential for success in higher education.

The project primarily offers two comprehensive tests: the Academic and Quantitative Literacy Test, which evaluates students’ readiness to engage with academic demands, and the Mathematics Test, which assesses competency in secondary education-level mathematical concepts. These assessments aim to provide valuable insights that aid educational institutions in student placement and curriculum development, ensuring a tailored approach to meet the unique needs of incoming learners.
