Nalanda Astronomy, also known as the Nalanda College Astronomical Society (NCAS), is a prominent brand in the field of astronomy in Sri Lanka. Established in 1995, the society initially focused on enhancing the knowledge of astronomy within Nalanda College. Over time, NCAS evolved into an active society that spread its expertise beyond the school.

One of the society's notable features is the Night Sky Observation Camping, which allows students to gain practical experience in observing the celestial wonders. As the popularity of astronomy grew, NCAS expanded its reach to other schools, sharing knowledge about telescopes and astronomical studies. Today, NCAS is a renowned astronomy club among all schools in the country, known for organizing lectures, workshops, exhibitions, night sky observation camps, and research projects.

The society boasts a quiz team that has achieved numerous victories and honors, including participating in international astronomy and astrophysics Olympiads. With a diverse range of astronomical equipment, including twelve telescopes, NCAS is at the forefront of astronomical research and exploration. Additionally, the society has made significant contributions to the technical field, with the creation of the first astronomical antenna and antenna network for meteor counting.

Membership in the Astronomical Society has grown to over 350 members, with the establishment of the Old Nalandian's Astronomical Society by alumni. NCAS aims to extend the study of Astronomy and Technology beyond Colombo, bringing it to schools across the country. Through various outreach programs and events, including night sky observation camps in different areas, NCAS promotes friendship and scientific enthusiasm among students.

The society has even organized observation camps to witness celestial events, such as an annular solar eclipse. Notable Sri Lankan astronomers and scientists, including Dr. Sarath Gunapala from NASA and Professor Padmajeewa Ganepola, a pioneer in South Asian research rocketry, have contributed to the nation's progress and have ties to Nalanda College.

Nalanda College Astronomical Society aims to continue its mission of fostering scientific enthusiasm and increasing the intellectual workforce to propel Sri Lanka towards a better future. With its wealth of knowledge and skills, NCAS stands as a formidable force for the advancement of astronomy in Sri Lanka
