NC Board of Nursing

The North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) is the state agency responsible for protecting the public by regulating the practice of nursing. Guided by values of equality, integrity, and agility, the Board works toward a vision of leading nursing regulation through exemplary nursing care. Its responsibilities span licensure, education, practice standards, investigations, and compliance.

The NCBON provides information and services for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse aides, and other regulated nursing professionals, including certified nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and clinical nurse specialists. Through its online Nurse Portal, users can apply for, renew, or reinstate licenses and manage license details. The Board also offers license verification, background-check guidance, continuing-competence resources, and information about examinations, endorsements, and multistate licensure.

For nursing education, the NCBON publishes approved-program information and resources for students and program directors. It provides guidance on laws, rules, and practice, and accepts complaints and self-reports while overseeing investigations and monitoring programs.
