About National Council on Independent Living
NCIL, short for the National Council on Independent Living, is a groundbreaking grassroots organization that is devoted to promoting independent living and advancing the rights of people with disabilities. Since its establishment in 1982, NCIL has been at the forefront of the disability rights and Independent Living Movements, representing thousands of individuals and organizations across the United States. At its core, NCIL embodies disability culture and the Independent Living philosophy, advocating for a society in which people with disabilities are valued equally and are able to participate fully.
NCIL assists member organizations, including Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), in building capacity to effect social change, eliminate discrimination, and create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in the legislative process. Despite progress, the vision of equality remains unrealized, as many people with disabilities are still confined to institutions while civil rights laws face continuous erosion. As a membership organization, NCIL relies on the support of advocates nationwide to achieve its goals and advance the disability rights movement.
Join NCIL today in working towards a society where everyone has equal opportunity to live, work, and prosper in their communities
