About NEC Commission
The Northeast Corridor Commission is the driving force behind the development and modernization of the Northeast Corridor rail network. This vital transportation artery encompasses the main line and connecting corridors to various cities, such as Harrisburg, PA; Spuyten Duyvil, NY; and Springfield, MA. Before the pandemic, it supported over 800,000 daily trips on eight commuter railroads and Amtrak's intercity services, connecting eight states and the District of Columbia.
The Commission brings together key stakeholders from state and federal governments, commuter agencies, and Amtrak to ensure coordinated regional leadership. Through collaboration, transparency, and accountability, the Commission promotes strategies to upgrade the rail network. It facilitates shared decision-making and annual cost sharing of over $1 billion.
The goal is to rebuild the NEC rail system over the next 15 years, making it more reliable, efficient, and accessible. This transformative investment guided by the CONNECT NEC 2035 plan aims to create new jobs, boost earnings, and save millions of dollars through reduced travel times. However, there are challenges ahead, with aging assets in need of repair or replacement and capacity limitations.
The NEC Capital Investment Plan addresses these issues by integrating infrastructure investments and ensuring consistent progress. The Northeast Corridor Commission strives to achieve collective success and enhance the region's transportation infrastructure beyond what any individual organization can accomplish
