CSIR–National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) is a Government of India-funded research institution operating under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, within the Ministry of Science and Technology. Established in Nagpur in 1958, it initially focused on water supply, sewerage, infectious diseases and industrial pollution. Today, the institute works across environmental science and engineering, supported by regional laboratories in Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.
CSIR-NEERI’s research and technical capabilities span air quality, water and earth systems, wastewater, solid and hazardous waste, environmental impact assessment, environmental health, toxicology, biotechnology, clean energy and climate risk. Its specialist centres also address environmental analysis, digital systems, industrial ecology, circular economy and ecosystem resilience. The institute provides expertise and services in areas including environmental assessment, auditing, planning, pollution monitoring and control, and the development of environmental technologies and tools. It also supports technology transfer, skills development, internships and scientific communication. Through its research, projects and collaborations, CSIR-NEERI contributes scientific knowledge and practical solutions to environmental challenges.
