Nēnē Research & Conservation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting and monitoring the Hawaiian goose, or nēnē. Its work spans the birds’ varied habitats across Hawaiʻi, from coastal grasslands and ranches to lava fields and subalpine shrubland. The organization combines community observations with field research to track individual birds, understand population patterns, and support nesting success.
Anyone can report a sighting, adding a photo, date, location, and—when visible—a leg-band code to help identify a bird. Solar-powered remote cameras read bands without handling nēnē and also monitor for predators. The nonprofit uses resighting records to improve population estimates and moves auto-resetting traps to sites where they can help nesting birds. Its tools include Kilo, an iOS field app in beta with Nēnē Recovery Action Group members, and an adoption program that lets supporters follow a banded bird’s resight history. The Nēnē Store offers in-house-designed shirts, stickers, and totes, with profits supporting fieldwork. Donations and monthly Patreon support fund predator control, cameras, acoustics, and open-data tools.
