About NeoLocalDesign
Neo Local Design is an initiative announced by the Alghero Architecture, Design and Planning Department (DADU), focused on using design to connect tradition and innovation and bring attention to local knowledge. Its activities explore how regional materials, crafts, identities and expertise can inform contemporary design, with a particular interest in Sardinia and the wider Mediterranean. The initiative offers design summer schools, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, research projects and an online blog that invites contributions from designers, craftspeople, experts and others interested in the relationship between tradition and innovation.
Projects have examined Sardinian copperware and contemporary craft, local identities in Morocco and Palestine, and the use of concrete in jewelry and accessories. Workshops have covered stop-motion animation, coding, generative graphic design, exhibition design and furniture made with local materials. Neo Local Design has also presented films and installations, developed corporate identity guidelines, and created the Mediterranean Crafts Archive, an online resource based on fieldwork in Sardinia, Morocco and Egypt.
