New Dramatists

New Dramatists is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting professional playwrights and advancing the development of new theatrical work. It describes itself as a creative laboratory, community center, and service organization, building a community of writers through free, self-guided seven-year residencies. Resident playwrights lead their own artistic development and can take part in working sessions, readings, collaborative workshops, and other programs designed to help ambitious projects grow.

The organization also supports playwrights through opportunities such as the Princess Grace Fellowship, the Kleban Prize for Musical Theatre, and PlayTime, a two-week developmental studio bringing writers together with directors, actors, designers, and fellow artists. New Dramatists presents readings, community events, and fundraising performances, including its annual theatrical benefit, with proceeds supporting resident playwrights and their work. Its programs connect current residents, alumni, and theatre professionals, while announcements and public events introduce audiences to new writing and the creative process. Based in New York, New Dramatists carries out its artistic, administrative, and community work in partnership with Houghton Hall Arts Community, where it offers spaces for writing, readings, and gatherings.
