About NewEconomyCoalition
New Economy Coalition (NEC) is a membership-based network that represents the solidarity economy movement in the United States. Their aim is to organize their members into a powerful and united force, accelerating the transition from capitalism to a solidarity economy. NEC's members consist of nonprofits, mission-driven businesses, grassroots community organizations, and sectoral associations.
While these groups often focus on specific strategies or geographic regions, they join NEC to be part of a cross-sectoral and national network. NEC envisions a world where people's lives are no longer dominated by capitalism or extractive systems. They strive for a world where everyone has what they need and where collective agency and self-determination are central.
To achieve this, NEC believes in building regional solidarity economy ecosystems, where communities control and govern essential resources such as housing, schools, farms, governance, and healthcare. NEC follows a set of core values inspired by the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing and Solidarity Economy Principles. These values include being rooted in history, culture, and tradition, practicing responsive and participatory governance, and adapting to changing conditions.
With a history dating back to 2012, NEC has undergone substantial growth and change. It has become more diverse in terms of staff and board members, shifted towards a post-capitalist project, and implemented a democratic membership governance structure. NEC is currently transitioning into a worker self-directed nonprofit, ensuring accountability to its membership.
NEC's team includes passionate individuals like Samara, the Interim IT Manager, who dreams of starting a community tool library, Zac, the Resource Mobilization Director, with expertise in food systems organizing, and Manuela, the Donor Engagement Director, who aims to build a cross-class, multi-racial network of supporters for the solidarity economy movement. As a member-based coalition, NEC invites organizations to join their efforts in creating a more just and impactful organization that embodies the values of the solidarity economy
