About New Orleans Historical
New Orleans Historical is a free web and mobile platform that makes historical scholarship about New Orleans and the surrounding area accessible to the public. A project of the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies, it brings together contributions from scholars, writers, artists, community members, and students working with faculty and staff. Through place-based storytelling, users can explore familiar landmarks and discover less-known accounts of the region’s past, supported by historical sources, oral histories, photographs, and artifacts.
The platform offers hundreds of individual stories, interactive maps, and curated tours organized around themes, historical periods, and locations. Users can explore nearby sites on foot, by car or bike, or virtually through the website and free app for Android and iPhone. Featured tours cover subjects such as Marie Laveau, New Orleans archaeology, and animals in the French Quarter. New Orleans Historical also welcomes partners, story submissions, and sponsors. Its work has received support from university departments and cultural organizations, and the platform is powered by Omeka and Curatescape, a humanities-focused web and mobile framework.
