Newport & District History Society is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers, dedicated to researching and sharing the heritage of Newport, Shropshire, and its surrounding villages. The society welcomes members and non-members to explore local history through talks, walks, research projects and community events. Monthly talks are generally held at Cosy Hall, while summer outings visit places of historical interest.
Members contribute through specialist groups focused on field archaeology, family history, vernacular architecture and local photography. The archaeology group conducts field walks, metal detecting and occasional excavations, with finds used for research and display. Society volunteers also catalogue and digitise historic documents and photographs, and maintain an archive for members’ research at the Heritage Resource Centre near the Guildhall.
The society publishes books and leaflets about local history, available from its heritage centre and online. Its projects include researching Newport’s historic inns and beer houses, supporting heritage records and preserving community collections.
