New Wave Gippsland

New Wave Gippsland is a community-led self-advocacy organisation for people with intellectual disability and/or acquired brain injury living in Gippsland, Victoria. Its three groups—New Wave Latrobe Valley, New Wave Bass Coast and South Gippsland, and Rainbow United—are run by and for their members. Together, members speak up for their rights and work towards having the same choices and opportunities as others in the community.

The organisation’s guiding principle is “Nothing about us, without us,” reflecting its focus on ensuring people with lived experience have a voice in matters that affect them. New Wave provides a place for people to come together, share perspectives, and build confidence in self-advocacy. Members describe learning about their rights and becoming more comfortable expressing their views, including saying no.
