Ngā Manu Nature Reserve is a charitable, non-profit organisation on the Kāpiti Coast, dedicated to educating people about and conserving New Zealand’s native wildlife, flora and fauna. Managed by the Ngā Manu Trust since 1974 and opened to the public in 1981, its 14-hectare reserve protects one of the region’s largest remnants of coastal lowland swamp forest. The reserve welcomes visitors to explore forest walks, see native birds in aviaries, feed eels and enjoy family-friendly attractions such as the Lil’ Explorer Trail and Piki’s Perch.
Ngā Manu also offers guided experiences, including Kiwi Night Encounters, Native Bird Close Encounters and tours featuring kiwi, tuatara and eels. Visitors can join nature photography tours or stay overnight at Theo’s Cottage for a chance to experience the reserve after dark. Educational visits, talks, corporate experiences, venue hire and events extend the organisation’s work into learning and community engagement. Through wildlife care, habitat protection and sustainable ecotourism, Ngā Manu helps people connect with Aotearoa’s natural heritage and supports the next generation of conservation guardians.
