Ngawi Sports Fishing Club is a community fishing club based in Ngawi on the southern coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Formed on 1 July 1991 with 20 members, it has grown into a large club serving a small coastal village. The club is home to the Big 3 Fishing Competition, described as the largest fishing competition in the lower North Island, and also presents King Kahawai Month.
Members can take part in 10 monthly Club Days, where catches are weighed and prizes are awarded. Prize money jackpots when a species is not caught or a Club Day is cancelled. Fishing in the area offers a variety of species, including blue cod, groper, tarakihi, trumpeter, kingfish, tuna, kahawai, snapper and billfish. The club also provides its members with access to two John Deere tractors for launching and retrieving boats. Ngawi financial members can pay an annual fee to use the tractors. Club activities include prizegiving, food and socialising after a day on the water.
