Northamptonshire Industrial Archaeology Group (NIAG) is a friendly society dedicated to studying, recording and promoting the county’s industrial heritage. Its work highlights Northamptonshire’s varied industrial past, including iron ore, building-stone and engineering industries, nationally significant boot and shoe manufacturing, eighteenth-century woollen textiles, and mills powered by the River Nene. The group also explores how the county’s roads, canals and railways shaped its development.
NIAG brings together people interested in industrial archaeology through meetings and other activities that encourage the exchange of ideas and information. Members visit and document heritage sites, take part in walks and events, and share their discoveries through reports, publications and photographs. The group’s website offers an introduction to local heritage, places to see and visit, event and conference information, a newsletter, monographs, and photo galleries and archives. NIAG also works with county, regional and national bodies, including the Sites and Monuments Record, and aims to contribute to the care of industrial heritage across Northamptonshire.
