Matthias Niessner

The Visual Computing & Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Technical University of Munich, headed by Prof. Matthias Nießner, is a research group at the forefront of computer vision, computer graphics, and artificial intelligence. Our focus is on obtaining highly-realistic digital replicas of the real world, including detailed 3D geometries, surface textures, and material definitions of static and dynamic scene environments.

Leveraging modern machine learning, we develop novel methods to learn strong priors that fuel 3D reconstruction techniques. Our ultimate goal is to achieve holographic representations that are visually indistinguishable from the real world, ideally captured from a simple webcam or mobile phone. This advancement is crucial for facilitating immersive augmented and virtual reality applications and will have a substantial positive impact in modern digital societies.

Our lab is also located at the research campus in Garching within the Faculty of Computer Science. We offer research fellowship opportunities for master's students and have multiple PhD and PostDoc openings. Our work has received recognition, with numerous papers and awards, including unicorn status for the spin-off company Synthesia
