The National Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), also known as NIFFR, is dedicated to promoting self-sufficiency in fish production for the sustainable livelihood of fisherfolks in Nigeria. Established in 1968 as The Kainji Lake Research Project, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), NIFFR focuses on rational exploitation of the country's inland aquatic resources. Originally conducting multidisciplinary activities on the Kainji and other man-made lakes, the institute's mandate shifted in 1987 to specifically target freshwater fisheries and other aquatic resources.

Areas of research include genetic improvement of freshwater fishes, distribution analysis, hydrological behavior, limnology, ecological effects of lake development, and aquaculture. In addition to research, NIFFR collaborates with federal and state ministries, industries, and primary producers, providing extension research, technical services, vocational training, and laboratory support. The institute also works closely with other relevant research institutes and organizations to maximize its impact.
