About National Institute of Fundamental Studies
NIFS(formerly known as IFS) is the premier multidisciplinary research institute in Sri Lanka for advancing fundamental sciences and nurturing future scientists. Established in 1981, NIFS is dedicated to conducting cutting-edge scientific research in natural and social sciences and philosophy. The institute focuses on 16 thematic research areas across 6 departments, addressing burning national issues and contributing to national development.
Alongside its emphasis on basic research, NIFS actively promotes scientific knowledge, especially among school children, and trains postgraduate researchers to prevent brain drain. As a center of excellence, NIFS envisions becoming a globally renowned institution for fundamental studies. Led by a Board of Governors and a dedicated director, the institute's research council provides oversight for research initiatives.
