The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is an autonomous society established in 1993 under India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences. Its mission is to develop reliable indigenous technologies addressing engineering challenges involved in exploring and using living and non-living resources in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. NIOT is guided by a Governing Council and headed by its Director.
The institute conducts research and technology development across a broad range of ocean-related fields. Its work includes deep-sea technology and mining, including the development of manned and unmanned underwater vehicles for exploration; marine sensors and ocean observation systems; ocean electronics and acoustics; offshore structures and components; and coastal and environmental engineering. NIOT also works on marine biotechnology, energy and freshwater technologies, and vessel operations through its Vessel Management Cell. Its engineering capabilities support applications such as desalination, mining and data buoys.
Alongside research, NIOT shares information through publications, annual reports, press releases and technology-transfer initiatives. It also hosts events and student programmes, including ocean-focused competitions and workshops.
