About National Motor Freight Traffic Association
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is a nonprofit membership organization based in Alexandria, Virginia. As the world's leading organization for less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers, NMFTA represents the interests of motor carriers operating in interstate, intrastate, and foreign commerce. NMFTA offers critical services to the industry, including classification standards, identification codes, digital operation standards, and cybersecurity support.
One of NMFTA's key services is the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC®) system, which provides shippers with a clear and standard method for classifying items for shipping. This system takes into account factors such as density, handling, stowability, and liability to assign classification numbers that carriers use to determine shipping rates. NMFTA also administers the Standard Carrier Alpha Code™ (SCAC®), which are exclusive identification codes assigned to carriers.
SCAC codes are required for carriers to do business with government agencies and commercial shippers in various industries. Additionally, NMFTA manages the Standard Point Location Code® (SPLC™), which assigns unique code numbers to originating and destination points for freight shipments in North America. This allows users to easily access accurate code information online.
NMFTA takes a proactive role in cybersecurity leadership within the trucking industry. With the industry's increasing digitization, NMFTA ensures that carriers are knowledgeable and prepared to protect themselves from cyber threats through webinars, one-on-one interaction, events, and an annual Digital Solutions Conference. Join NMFTA to benefit from these services and get involved in advancing the LTL trucking industry
