Welcome to the National Museum of Natural History, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NMNHS) - the premier institution dedicated to the study and preservation of scientific collections in Bulgaria and beyond. With a mission that encompasses fundamental and applied research, collection management, educational outreach, and expert activities, NMNHS plays a crucial role in advancing natural-scientific knowledge. Our priority areas include biodiversity, environmental protection, and the evolution of organisms.
The museum is home to an extensive collection of live and non-live specimens, totaling nearly one and a half million items. Our scientific research spans various disciplines, including taxonomy, faunistics, ecology, and mineralogy. Notably, NMNHS is renowned as the national center for biospeleology, archaeozoology, palaeontology of vertebrates, and bat studies.
Apart from scientific research, we are also committed to education and public engagement. Annually, we welcome around 50,000 visitors who explore our exhibitions, including temporary displays on diverse topics such as the accomplishments of Academician Ivan Buresch and Bulgarian participation in UNESCO's Program The Man and the Biosphere. Join us at NMNHS to delve into the fascinating world of natural history and gain a deeper understanding of our planet's remarkable diversity
