About Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch is a renowned and historic crime prevention program that has been protecting communities for centuries. Although it gained prominence in the late 1960s, its origins can be traced back to Colonial settlements where night watchmen roamed the streets. The modern version of Neighborhood Watch-USAonWatch Program was established in response to rising burglary rates and citizens' requests for a crime prevention initiative that would involve community collaboration.
In 1972, the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) secured funding to make the program a national effort, thanks to a grant from the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. Initially focused on disseminating information and securing residential properties, Neighborhood Watch evolved into a proactive community-oriented program. Today, Neighborhood Watch fosters partnerships between local law enforcement agencies and citizens, incorporating activities beyond crime prevention.
Members actively participate in neighborhood cleanups and community improvement projects, aiming to improve the quality of life for residents. With the adoption of community policing and the active involvement of vigilant citizens, Neighborhood Watch has become an essential pillar in maintaining safer communities
