NBGK, or the National Biodiversity and Gene Conservation Center, serves as Hungary's leading genetic conservation institution, established on June 1, 2019, through the merger of the former Tápiószele Plant Diversity Center and the Gödöllő Animal Genetic Resources Center. Managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, NBGK operates as the country’s largest gene bank, entrusted with comprehensive genetic preservation operations.
This significant center focuses on safeguarding biodiversity, which encompasses the variety of life forms on Earth, including habitat diversity, species diversity, and genetic variability within species. NBGK conducts vital tasks related to gene protection and conservation of agricultural plants and livestock genetic resources, adhering to international agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity and the FAO Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
In addition to its core activities, NBGK offers research and development, educational initiatives, and public outreach services to enhance understanding and appreciation of biodiversity. The center also manages sales of day-old chicks and breeding eggs, with orders opening in mid-January for the 2024 season.
