Northern Lights JV is a brand that specializes in the development and operation of CO2 transport and storage facilities as part of the Longship project. This project, initiated by the Norwegian Government, aims to establish a comprehensive carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure network. The Longship project will be the first-ever cross-border, open-source CO2 transport and storage system in the world.

It offers companies across Europe the opportunity to securely and permanently store their CO2 emissions underground. The first phase of the project, scheduled to be operational by 2024, will have a storage capacity of up to 1. 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Northern Lights is responsible for the transport and storage components of the project. The project involves capturing CO2 from industrial sources in the Oslo-fjord region, such as cement and waste-to-energy plants, and transporting the liquid CO2 via pipelines to an onshore terminal on the Norwegian west coast. From there, the liquefied CO2 will be transported to a subsea storage location in the North Sea for long-term storage.

The Longship project demonstrates the Norwegian Government's commitment to developing a full-scale CCS value chain in Norway, with the aim of showcasing decarbonization techniques to Europe and the rest of the world. Through strong government support, the Northern Lights project provides tangible decarbonization opportunities for both Norwegian and European industries. Feasibility studies carried out by the government have confirmed the viability of the project, covering various aspects such as capture, transport, and storage solutions.
