Norsk Brunbielag is a Norwegian interest organization dedicated to conserving and improving the Nordic brown bee, Apis mellifera mellifera, the honeybee subspecies native to Norway and northern Europe. The association aims to strengthen the bee as a pure, well-bred and valued choice among Norwegian beekeepers, while supporting healthy populations and preserving genetic diversity for the future.
Its work brings together beekeepers and other conservation partners to promote local and national breeding efforts. Activities include discussing breeding plans, preserving genetic material, coordinating DNA sampling and sharing research findings on brown bee populations. The organization also supports collaboration with regional beekeeping associations, Norges Birøkterlag, NIBIO’s Norwegian Genetic Resource Centre, and Nordic and international conservation networks.
Norsk Brunbielag shares information about the brown bee’s characteristics, habitat and history, and invites people interested in bees to take part in meetings and its annual gathering. Through these activities, it helps build knowledge, cooperation and practical opportunities for conserving and using Norway’s native honeybee.
