About North Slope Science
The North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) is dedicated to enhancing the understanding of Alaska's North Slope ecosystems, focusing on terrestrial, aquatic, and marine environments. Established in response to the challenges posed by resource development activities and climate change, the NSSI promotes scientific collaboration among federal, state, local, and Alaska Native entities. Its primary mission is to provide resource managers with critical data and analyses to effectively evaluate ecological and management goals.
The NSSI's structure includes an Oversight Group that guides the initiative's direction and priorities, comprising representatives from key environmental and resource management agencies. Additionally, the Science Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) offers expert advice on research and monitoring strategies, bringing together a diverse array of scientific expertise.
Ultimately, the NSSI aims to streamline information sharing among various stakeholders—including government agencies, NGOs, industry, and academia—to foster informed decision-making that supports the sustainable management of the North Slope's unique ecosystems.
