Nova Acrópole Portugal is part of an international, nonprofit humanistic organization founded in 1957 by historian and philosopher Jorge Ángel Livraga. Present in 60 countries and 13 Portuguese cities, it describes itself as a school of philosophy that promotes culture and practises volunteering. Its work is guided by principles of fraternity, eclectism and education, with the aim of encouraging personal development, social participation and respect for human dignity, nature and the wider world.

The organization offers philosophical education through practical courses, including a Course in Philosophy for Life, as well as online courses and study groups. Its cultural programme includes events, lectures, articles, magazines, podcasts, books and educational resources exploring philosophy, literature, science, mathematics and other subjects. Nova Acrópole also runs volunteer training and community projects, with activities delivered by volunteers in service of the common good. Through these programmes, it seeks to connect learning with everyday life, helping participants develop their potential and contribute thoughtfully to society. Local centres organize courses, cultural events and volunteering initiatives throughout Portugal.
