About American Trails
The National Recreation Trails (NRT) program, established by Congress in 1968, celebrates and preserves America's diverse trail systems. With over 1,300 designated trails, the program encourages exploration of scenic, historic, and recreational pathways across urban and natural landscapes, from waterways to mountains. NRTs offer numerous benefits, including enhanced conservation, increased public access, and recognition for trail stewardship.
Interested trail owners can apply for NRT designation through an organized online process, with applications due each November. The program also supports the National Water Trails System, which highlights waterways suitable for recreational use. The NRT initiative not only fosters appreciation for America's outdoor spaces but also provides resources and knowledge through webinars, photo contests, and training sessions. By promoting the health and vitality of these trails, the NRT program fosters a deeper connection between communities and nature, inviting everyone to embrace the beauty of the great outdoors. Join the movement and explore America's incredible trails today!
