The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Rhode Island (NSCDA-RI) is a heritage organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the state’s colonial history. As one of 42 affiliated societies within the national organization, it promotes the study of American history and the preservation of historic places and cultural materials, including buildings, artifacts, diaries, minutes, and contemporary accounts. Its work also considers how the past continues to shape the present, including Rhode Island’s maritime heritage and complex history.
NSCDA-RI maintains two historic properties: the Stephen Hopkins House in Providence and Whitehall Museum House in Middletown. The society offers educational programs that introduce young people to American history and civic values, and supports students through scholarships and awards recognizing achievement in history and community service. It also participates in community projects related to historic preservation. Membership is open to eligible applicants who document descent from an ancestor who served the country in one of the original thirteen colonies before 1776.
