About NSCF
NSCF_SA🇿🇦, also known as the Natural Science Collections Facility, is a network of South African institutions dedicated to preserving and studying natural science collections. As part of the Department of Science & Technology’s Research Infrastructure Roadmap, NSCF_SA🇿🇦 is coordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and works towards several important objectives. Firstly, NSCF_SA🇿🇦 ensures that collections are secured and accessible physically and virtually for research purposes.
They also strive to make data from these collections accessible and utilized for managing collections, research, and decision-making. Additionally, NSCF_SA🇿🇦 conducts research using these collections and associated data to address issues of national and global significance. Moreover, NSCF_SA🇿🇦 provides valuable services such as identifying natural science specimens for stakeholders in various sectors like agriculture, health, environmental management, and academia.
They also serve the wider society through education, citizen science, and public understanding projects, with a special focus on inspiring young scientists and promoting South Africa's unique biodiversity assets.
