North South Initiative (NSI) is a Malaysia-based social justice non-governmental organisation working to empower migrants, refugees and other vulnerable communities. Its social mobilizers support sustainable community development, while its research and advocacy aim to advance workers’ rights and influence policy. NSI focuses on migrant communities including Indonesians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, people from Myanmar and Nepalis.
The organisation provides casework and referrals related to labour violations and human trafficking, and supports strategic litigation. Its services also include forced-labour consultancy and audit assessments, research and training, community development, and free, anonymous community-based testing for HIV and certain sexually transmitted infections. NSI’s Solidarity House offers temporary emergency shelter for male migrant workers and refugees. Migrant workers can contact caseworkers confidentially for support in six languages on employment, recruitment, health, safety and migration matters.
NSI also developed SafeStep, an app intended to help Bangladeshis seeking overseas employment access information and tools for safer, more transparent and ethical recruitment.
