About NUJ
NUJ, the National Union of Journalists, has been fighting for journalists and journalism for over 100 years. Today, it stands as one of the largest independent journalists' unions in the world. NUJ members are found across various media platforms, including newspapers, broadcasting, book publishing, magazines, websites, mobile devices, social media, and PR agencies.
The union represents a diverse range of jobs within the industry, ranging from reporting, writing, photography, and editing to design, videography, communications, and presenting. Whether it's a small independent online news start-up or a large media company like the BBC or the Guardian, NUJ works tirelessly to support its members. The union also advocates for its members working in non-media companies, such as PR officers, website editors, and social media officers.
With a membership that includes both staff (54%) and freelancers (46%), the NUJ offers specialist training for career development, as well as campaigns for improved pensions. Diversity is a priority for the NUJ, with nearly 40% of its membership being women, over 7% identifying as Black or from other minority ethnic groups, and nearly 2% self-identifying as disabled. The union's various councils address issues of prejudice and under-representation while advising on organizing and campaigning initiatives.
The NUJ is politically independent but has a parliamentary group in Westminster to advocate for journalists and journalism. In Ireland, it has successfully lobbied for freelance rights, and in Scotland and Wales, it has secured funding for member training from the respective governments. Overall, the NUJ is committed to supporting and empowering journalists, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights protected
