It helped spark innovation as service providers introduced new features and services to entice consumers to choose them as their phone company. The ability to keep their telephone number meant consumers and businesses were more likely to change service providers to take advantage of those new features and services.

About Iconectiv
The Number Portability Administration Center (NPAC) is at the forefront of enabling consumers to seamlessly keep their telephone numbers when switching service providers. This behind-the-scenes system makes Local Number Portability (LNP) work for all U.S. telephone numbers, including wireless, wireline, and VoIP. Authorized NPAC users, such as Service Providers, PTRS users, law enforcement agencies, and public safety providers, have exclusive access to proprietary data from thousands of competing Service Providers.
Service Providers and Telecom-related Service Providers can use NPAC data for routing, rating, billing, and network maintenance. Law enforcement agencies benefit from accessing porting history and Service Provider ownership data to aid investigations. Call and contact centers utilizing PortData Comply can access daily updates of ported telephone numbers for telephone marketing or research, ensuring compliance with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Businesses concerned with fraud and risk mitigation can register for PortData Validate to verify the porting history and Service Provider ownership of specific telephone numbers.
The introduction of Local Number Portability (LNP) under the Telecommunications Act of 1996 provided consumers with the option to retain their telephone numbers when changing Service Providers. This policy aimed to promote competition, reduce prices, and encourage technological innovation in the telecommunications sector. The process of number portability became possible with the creation of the Location Routing Number (LRN), a unique 10-digit telephone number assigned to each switch, ensuring accurate call routing.
As the authoritative partner of the communications industry, iconectiv plays a crucial role in managing the largest system of ported telephone number databases in the world. As the Local Number Portability Administrator (LNPA) for the United States, iconectiv is responsible for facilitating the porting of telephone numbers, coordinating mass changes like LRN transfers, and distributing ported number information to Service Providers for network administration. With their expertise in securing telecommunications infrastructure, iconectiv ensures a seamless LNP experience for consumers and service providers alike.
