NVMR

Northern Virginia Model Railroaders (NVMR) is a long-established club for model railroad enthusiasts, based in the historic train depot in downtown Vienna, Virginia. Founded more than 75 years ago, the organization has operated from the depot for over 45 years and brings together more than ninety members. Its central project is a large, permanent HO-scale model railroad depicting North Carolina’s Western North Carolina Railroad as it appeared in the 1950s. The detailed layout represents towns, stations, industries, locomotives, and rail operations along the 138-mile route between Salisbury and Asheville, and also features a fictional but realistic electric trolley and interurban line.

NVMR maintains the layout and welcomes the public at regular open houses, offering visitors of all ages a close-up view of train movements, switching, and freight operations. Digital Command Control enables members to operate multiple trains independently. The club holds nine regular open houses each year, along with three special events connected to Vienna’s seasonal celebrations. Admission is free, and donations are accepted.
