About Fencible Society
The New Zealand Fencible Society Incorporated is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the Royal New Zealand Fencibles, retired soldiers from Britain and Ireland who served as a "defence force" for early settlers in Auckland from 1847 to 1852. These men, along with their families, settled in areas like Onehunga, Otahuhu, Panmure, and Howick, where they were provided with cottages and land in exchange for their service. The Society highlights the fascinating history of the Fencibles, detailing their enlistment conditions, the ships that brought them to New Zealand, and their contributions to the development of Auckland's infrastructure.
Today, the descendants of these brave individuals continue to thrive, with over a quarter of a million Fencible descendants worldwide. The New Zealand Fencible Society Incorporated serves as a tribute to these pioneers who shaped Auckland into the vibrant community it is today
