NZIMMR, the New Zealand Institute for Minerals to Materials Research, is a leading organization established in 2017 as one of four Regional Research Institutes. Located in Greymouth on the West Coast, NZIMMR has received $11 million of seed funding to support its mission under contract with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The institute boasts two state-of-the-art laboratories: a minerals processing laboratory and a minerals to materials laboratory, enabling robust research capability.

NZIMMR focuses on unlocking the potential of mining operations, partnering with smaller operators to maximize their output and working to make uneconomic minerals economically viable. By meeting the growing global demand for minerals and materials, NZIMMR actively supports Vision Mātauranga and fosters collaboration with Ngāi Tahu, a significant landholder in the West Coast region. Led by a dedicated team with diverse expertise, including Chief Executive Mike Meehan, Commercial Manager Susan Wright, Principal Scientist Dr Sudip Ray, and Research and Development Engineer Dr Quang Anh Dang, NZIMMR conducts cutting-edge research into materials development, nanotechnology, circular economy, and more.
