About Portrait Gallery
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is dedicated to telling the stories of New Zealanders through the art of portraiture. Established in 1990 as a charitable trust, we have been housed in our permanent home at Shed 11 on Wellington’s waterfront since 2012. Our gallery enables audiences to engage with a diverse range of portraits depicting individuals who have shaped our country's development or influenced our national identity.
Through the medium of portraiture, we offer unique perspectives on ourselves, our history, our creativity, and our place in the world. The Gallery relies on donations from individuals and organizations to support our ongoing work, and sponsors to fund our annual portrait competitions, the Adam Portraiture Award and the Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award. We deeply appreciate the dedication of our volunteers who serve on our Board of Trustees, committees, and as team members.
