The New Zealand Writers Guild (NZWG) is the professional association for New Zealand film and television scriptwriters. Founded in 1976, it supports screenwriters through industry advocacy, professional resources, career guidance and opportunities to connect with fellow writers. Its membership is designed to assist writers at different stages of their careers and provide pathways into the New Zealand screen industry.
NZWG offers services and information covering contracts, negotiation and mediation, copyright, rates, tax, credit arbitration and writer well-being. Members can access script assessments and registration, a script library, producer listings, table reads, workshops and events. The Guild also provides practical resources such as a career checklist, best-practice guidance and advice on artificial intelligence for screenwriters. Its grant programmes include Seed Grants and Kōpere Ake.
Through its advocacy and member support, NZWG works to advance screenwriters’ rights and interests while helping writers navigate the business of writing. The Guild also shares updates and resources through its bulletin, and offers membership tiers with associated benefits.
